“Our High School Varsity Team was focused on making a run at both a State and National Championship this year. It has been a goal of a group of 2020 seniors, including myself, ever since we started playing with the Redhawks back in 4th grade. We were ranked 5th in the Nation, with the National Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah to occur mid-May, when the covid 19 virus halted play. As you could imagine, that was devastating to us”, said senior Ben Watson who is also one of five Redhawks players on the Club’s Player Leadership Committee. Ben continued, “After feeling sorry for ourselves for a short period, our Player Leadership Committee decided that it was time to instead focus on doing what we could to help those impacted in ways much more dire than the loss of the sport we love. We looked at the many needs in the community and we ultimately decided to hold an online fundraiser for the Food Bank.” “Frankly, we wish we could do more”, said senior Vince Meymandi, another member of the Redhawks player Leadership Committee. He continued, “the Redhawks have always taught us a set of core values, which include discipline and respect, and we often engage in community service as part of that, but it also makes us feel better helping others, especially in these trying times.” The Redhawks hope that training and games will resume later this year. In the meantime, they are trying to focus on individual fitness, rugby IQ and helping others. For more information about the Raleigh Redhawks, visit our website at Redhawksrugby.com. |
